The UK's Plug-In Solar Revolution Is Now Law

For years, going solar in the UK meant a £10,000 plus roof installation, planning permission and months of waiting. That has now changed. Statutory Instrument 2026/848 makes plug-in solar systems legal to connect directly to a standard UK socket from 27 August 2026, up to 800W, no electrician required for installation.

The EU has had this for years. Germany, the Netherlands and France already have millions of balcony solar units generating free electricity for homeowners who rented their properties or simply could not afford full installations. The UK has now caught up, and Gemshore is your guide to getting it right.

We have built the most comprehensive UK guide to plug-in solar available, covering the regulations, the hardware requirements, the safety standards and exactly what to look for when compliant products go on sale.

What the Law Change Means
Up to 800W of solar power connected via a standard fused plug, with no planning permission and no structural work required. You must still submit a G98 notification to your Distribution Network Operator within 28 days of connecting.
🔒
Certification and Fuse Rating, Why It Matters
Only compliant units meeting the verified Interim Product Specification are legal, including a maximum 5A fused plug. Cheap uncertified imports will still be available and still dangerous. Our guide explains exactly what to look for before you buy.

Already Covered in Our Guides
Our plug-in solar guide, solar batteries guide and hardware pages already cover everything you need to build a compliant, efficient system. We update our guides as certified products come to market.
Solar Solutions

Solar Power Without the Roof or the £10,000 Bill

Not everyone can install roof panels. Wrong orientation, rented property, conservation area or simply the cost. Gemshore covers every alternative, plug-in solar panels that generate free electricity from your garden or balcony, high-capacity solar batteries that store power for when you need it, and complete systems over 800W for serious off-grid setups.

Every product is independently reviewed against real UK conditions, not manufacturer claims. Use our interactive finder to match the right solar solution to your home, budget and energy goals.

🔋 Backup Power

When the Power Goes Off, You Stay On

Power cuts in the UK are more common than most people realise, and increasingly unpredictable. A portable power station with UPS mode switches to battery in under 30 milliseconds, your router stays connected, your laptop keeps running, your medical device never interrupts. No noise, no fumes, safe indoors.

For longer outages, larger setups or situations where silence is not an option, our inverter generator guide covers the best pure sine wave units available, from quiet 1kW models to serious 3.5kW workhorses. And for motorhomes, narrowboats and off-grid setups, our chargeable leisure battery guide covers every voltage from 12V to 48V.

🔧 Hardware and Safety

The Kit That Ties Your System Together, Done Right

A solar panel and battery are only as good as the cables, connectors and charge controllers between them. Undersized cables overheat. Wrong connectors arc. Uncertified inverters can back-feed into the grid and injure engineers. Getting the hardware right is not optional, it is what separates a safe, efficient system from a dangerous one.

Our hardware guides cover MC4 solar cables and connectors, MPPT and PWM charge controllers, pure sine wave inverters, surge protectors and energy monitors, everything you need to build a compliant, efficient and safe installation.

Can I run a kettle off a portable power station?
  • Yes, most 500Wh+ power stations can run a standard UK kettle, but only for short bursts since kettles draw 2,000 to 3,000W.
  • You'll want a power station with at least 1,800W continuous output to handle the surge.
  • See our full breakdown in Life with a Solar Battery: The Best Portable Power Picks.
What's the best inverter generator for UK homes?
  • For most UK households, a 2 to 3kW petrol inverter generator strikes the right balance between runtime and portability.
  • Your choice depends on what you need to power during an outage, so sizing to your actual load matters more than buying the biggest unit available.
  • Compare our top picks in Inverter Generators.
What's a good solar-powered gift?
  • Solar phone chargers, solar Bluetooth speakers, and solar garden lights are popular, affordable options that don't need any installation.
  • These make good gifts for campers, gardeners, or anyone wanting a practical eco-friendly gadget.
  • See our full list in Cool Solar Gadgets That Actually Work.
What are the best solar gadgets for camping?
  • Foldable solar panels, solar lanterns, and compact power banks are the most useful for camping since they're lightweight and charge from direct sunlight.
  • Pairing a foldable panel with a small power station gives you a genuinely useful off-grid charging setup for a weekend away.
  • Full picks in Cool Solar Gadgets That Actually Work.
Is plug-in solar legal in the UK?
  • Yes, as of Statutory Instrument 2026/848, plug-in solar systems up to 800W are legal to connect via a standard fused socket from 27 August 2026.
  • Compliant kits must use a 5A fused plug, and a G98 notification to your Distribution Network Operator is still required.
  • Full details in Plug-In Solar Is Now Legal in the UK.
What's the difference between a solar battery and a portable power station?
  • Solar batteries are typically fixed, higher-capacity systems designed to store energy from a home solar array.
  • Portable power stations are smaller, mobile units better suited for backup power, camping, or outdoor use.
  • Compare both in Solar Batteries.
How much does home battery storage cost in the UK?
  • Home battery storage typically costs between £4,000 and £6,000 installed, depending on capacity and battery chemistry.
  • Prices vary by brand, with LiFePO4 batteries generally costing more upfront but lasting significantly longer than standard lithium-ion.
  • See real options in Solar Batteries.
What size solar system do I need for my house?
  • Most 3 to 4 bedroom UK homes need a 3.5kWp to 4kWp solar system to cover daytime electricity use.
  • The exact size depends on your roof space and household electricity consumption.
  • See our sizing guide in Solar Systems Over 800W.
Does Gemshore sell products directly?
  • No, Gemshore is a guide covering solar panels, portable power stations, home battery storage, and off-grid energy solutions.
